Rare Lion Sculpture

Carl Milles

Produced by Herman Bergmans Fud.

1930s

An early cast, prior to the 1940s.
Gilt bronze.
Signed facsimile signature Carl Milles and foundry marks to the base.

History:
While a numbered edition of this sculpture of twelve exists, Carl Milles only began numbering his works in the 1940s. This sculpture was cast prior to that period, making it an early, unnumbered example. The exact number of these early casts remains unclear, though it is understood to be limited, with works held in both public and private collections.

The lion was originally conceived to flank the figure of Poseidon at Götaplatsen in Gothenburg, but the larger project was never realized due to insufficient funding.

Jackson's would like to thank Millesgården for their assistance with the cataloguing of this sculpture.
